Lzzy Hale (Halestorm)

Halestorm is an American rock band from Red Lion, Pennsylvania. The group's self-titled debut album was released on April 28, 2009 through Atlantic Records. Their second album is set for release on April 10, 2012.

Siblings Arejay and Elizabeth "Lzzy" Hale have been actively writing and performing original music since 1997 when they were 10 and 13 years old, respectively. Both brother and sister started learning piano at the age of 5; Lzzy later progressed to a keytar and Arejay to the drums. Lzzy took guitar lessons at 16. The teen siblings released an EP titled Don't Mess With the Time Man in 2000. In Halestorm's earliest incarnation, Lzzy and Arejay's father, Roger Hale played bass before Josh Smith joined the group in 2004. Guitarist Joe Hottinger joined in 2003. The group signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records on June 28, 2005 and released a live EP titled One and Done. The EP, now out of print, featured an early live version of "It's Not You". Their self-titled debut album was released on April 28, 2009. The song "I Get Off" served as the album's lead single and has gained heavy radio play. Both the song and video for their second single, "It's Not You", were released in late November 2009. In early 2010, the band released a promotional music video for their new song "Love/Hate Heartbreak". Their most recent single, "Familiar Taste of Poison", was released in 2010. The official music video was released on August 10, 2010. Halestorm is well known for their near non-stop touring, often performing as many as 250 shows a year. Since 2006 they have toured with many hard rock and heavy metal acts including Chevelle, Seether, Staind, Papa Roach, Trapt, Three Days Grace, Theory of a Deadman, Buckcherry, Disturbed, Shinedown, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Hellyeah, and Heaven & Hell. Halestorm appeared on the first annual Rockstar Energy drink Uproar Festival, and in October 2010 Halestorm traveled to Japan to participate in the Loud Park Festival. Halestorm also appeared on the 2010 Taste of Chaos tour. On November 16, 2010 Halestorm released a live CD/DVD entitled Live in Philly 2010, which was recorded at The TLA in Philadelphia in early 2010. From various Twitter posts, mainly from Lzzy Hale, it appears that Halestorm is recording demos for their next studio album. On March 22, 2011, Halestorm released an EP called ReAnimate containing covers of songs of different genres, including "Out Ta Get Me" by Guns N' Roses, "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga, and the first single "Slave to the Grind" by Skid Row. On January 24, 2012, Halestorm announced their second full-length album, The Strange Case of..., which is set for release on April 10, 2012.

Halestorm was the featured artist on the cover of Origivation magazine in October 2006 and appeared on the cover of Pennsylvania Musician magazine three times (August 1999, March 2000, and February 2003). Lzzy Hale appeared on the cover of Revolver magazine along with Grace Perry from Landmine Marathon in their December 2009 edition of the "Hottest Chicks in Metal". Lzzy Hale has also been noted for her use of Gibson Guitars. Arejay Hale was featured in the June 2010 issue of Modern Drummer magazine, and is endorsed by Ludwig Drums, Zildjian Cymbals and Pro-Mark Drumsticks. Lzzy Hale lent her vocals to a reworked version of the Shinedown song "Shed Some Light" from the album Us and Them, although this version was never officially released and only saw a small amount of play on a few radio stations located within the band's home state of Pennsylvania and WRIF out of Detroit. The song received significant airplay in Chicago on radio station WIIL. Lzzy and Brent Smith have since performed the song LIVE only one time since the recording of the song on May 21, 2009 at a club called The Brat Stop in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She also lent her vocals to the Shinedown song "Breaking Inside" which was released with the song and music video "Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)" on iTunes. On September 5, 2007, Halestorm appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as part of the Jaywalking segment. On July 21, 2010 they appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as the musical guest, performing "Familiar Taste of Poison". Lzzy Hale appeared on Black Stone Cherry's album Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea as a backup vocalist on the songs "Such a Shame" and "Won't Let Go".

Lzzy rocks, February 21, 2012 By Timothy Eastman "prez" (Almond, WI USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) No doubt this band is professional sounding all the way. Don't be fooled by the popular video for "Familiar Taste of Poison" with a softer melodic feel, the rest of the songs rock hard. YouTube has videos for a few of their other songs proving this: "I Get Off" vid has a sorta old school Joan Jett feel that rocks hard; "It's Not You" and "Love/Hate Heartbreak" bring the heart of their sound out nicely. If you like straight shot rock women (with a classic Joan Jett aura) then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music., December 8, 2011 By Adrian1804 - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) As soon as I heard a song by Halestorm, i searched on amazon, and (after some previews) bought the cd. I totally recommend this band. Their music is mostly hard rock, her voice is amazing, and...well, that's pretty much what i like! The lyrics are also good, but I had no chance to pay real attention to them yet, so I can't talk about that. I'd say: buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, September 26, 2011 By A Catshovel - See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) This is a really great album. I never really got into this band until I was them live and they were freaking awesome; they stole the show from Bullet for my Valentine and Seether. After a few listens, this has grown to be one of my favorite recently purchased albums.

This band tries to pass themselves off as heavy act, yet the songs remind me of a Shania Twain album, albeit with a faster tempo and slightly more aggressive guitars. What drew me to listen to this band was the female vocal talent that would have been better placed in a power-metal or goth-metal band. It seems from the album cover that the band attempts to hype its image just a little excessively. If you're going to portray yourselves as a metal/hard rock band, make the music catchy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, Hot, Hot, May 1, 2011 By Stryder1030 "stryder1030" (Midland, MI USA) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) I can honestly say, I have not been interested in a new band since the Fuel/Puddle of Mudd time. But Halestorm has been my new found love interest. I was able to completely envelope myself inside this album and turned it inside out. The music is amazing, deep tones, hard driving raw sexual power, but with the voice and face of Lzzy Hale, how could you not. All in all, best new band I've seen and heard in YEARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOOOOOVE Halestorm! <3, March 24, 2011 By Alesha S. (Missouri USA) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm [Expanded] (MP3 Download) Saw them and heard of them for the first time at a Trapt concert. Met Halestorm outside after the show and bought their first EP from Arejay (the drummer) who then walked my friend and I to my car and attempted to kiss me, & wanted me to go to the bar with them but that's another story, LOL. Anyway, seeing them live was super impressive and Lzzy knows how to rock! Love her voice and love the guitars, drums ALL OF IT! This album was even better than I expected it to be. It was nice to have this after listening to the 5 songs on their EP over and over again! Also love this version of "It's Not You", even though it doesn't have to super long awesome intro, but you can see that live if you catch them on stage :) BUY IT! THEY ROCK!

Michael Napier (Ocala, FL United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) Why this band gets rated so high. What you have is a talented band, a talent lead singer, but they are handcuffed by the fact that they sound better live than in the studio, and this is nothing more than over produced pop rock. It's a shame that "It's Not You", sounds better on the One And Done EP, than the studio version on this release. They offer nothing new with this debut, you have only two decent songs out of 11, and lyrically it's a poor album. Now this isn't even close to being heavy metal music, unless some reviewers are comparing it to the crap Bad English or Nelson released as heavy metal music. I don't hear the comparison to Pat Benatar, Heart, or Lita Ford, but rather Avril Lavigne due to Lzzy Hale doing that tough-bad girl thing, Sandi Saraya, or the'80's metal singer Fiona are closer to what Halestorm sounds like. Due to the sexual oriented songs, you could compare them to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, but even that's pushing it, due to the poor lyrics, the fact Joan's just to good of a singer, and the simple fact that they are a true Rock'n Roll band. Save your hard earned money, I paid $22.24 for there debut, along with the One And Done EP, and I wouldn't recommend this band. They'll end up in the used bin at my local Fye store. It's just a shame that Halstorm in the studio, sounds nothing like they do live, and if they ever can achieve that on a studio release, they'll be huge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, October 12, 2010 By E. Mayo "inadreem" (queens, new york USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) I bought this CD immediately after seeing this band live at the Uproar Tour this past summer. They were absolutely amazing. The whole band is talented and no one member outshines another, which is rare for a femaled-fronted rock band. They were great live, but I didn't really, truly appreciate the band until I heard the whole album. Buy it - you'll love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent band!, October 11, 2010 By Drabarius - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) Incredible vocals, excellent guitar, finally a band worth listening to. Reminds me of some of the heavy metal bands I listened to in the 80's. Halestorm rocks!

This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) It's good. It is. It's entertaining and energetic listening. But it ain't groundbreaking. If you are looking for some good, solid rock, this is a good purchase. But don't get it expecting anything new or different. Good, solid effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Halestorm is awesome, September 1, 2010 By FRESHNINA - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) Halestorm is an amazingly talented band. Lzzy Hale is an incredible vocalist. Live they come across as more metal then the album. Amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Halestorm, August 25, 2010 By Ryan C. Cutler - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) One of the best cd's of 2009 featuring todays premier female vocalist, Lzzy Hale. There's not a note she can't hit or a song she can't sing. Everyone song is good and there's even a few bonus tracks that should be on this cd. It sounds a little bit produced, but don't worry, she's even better in person or on their live EP (One and Done), if you've ever seen them live you know what I mean.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Old Hard Rock, July 2, 2010 By TurboNerd (Greenacres, FL United States) - See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) This is a very good band with a surprising sound for such young members. Lzzy is an excellent vocalist/guitarist. The rest of the band are also very talented. I find it surprising that in this day and age a young band like this actually plays good hard rock like it was meant to be. I really like the CD and the songs are all good. I'll be listening to it regularly and anxiously awaiting their next album. I think it's fairly obvious who wrote the lyrics for pretty much every song on the CD. It's like a diary of a young woman's love life. There is nothing wrong with that and the great, hard driving rock music behind the vocals really makes me like this band. My one suggestion would be for someone besides Lzzy to write some of the songs on the next album and although writing songs about life is what most do, an entire album of songs about problems with your love life is a bit tedious. Great job for a first album. Let's hear some new and hopefully more versatile stuff the next time around. Halestorm rocks!

I Get Off on Halestorm!, June 28, 2010 By CharmedTree - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) I fell in love with Halestorm when I first heard "I Get Off" on the radio. I was then lucky enough to see them in concert at a small club and I am happy to say they are just as good live as they are on the cd. They are true musicians who can rock!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful: 3.0 out of 5 stars It surprises me..., June 5, 2010 By A. Gonzalez "A.K.A. Rollo Tomasi" - See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) how highly rated this album is. I'm not trying to be a jerk or a troll, but this album (in my opinion) is no where near a 5 star album. I'm not going to lie, I'm a big fan of female fronted metal/rock bands, but this album just didn't do anything for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a bad album.... it's just an average album. With the high ratings I went into it expecting more. The band plays hard rock (attitude-rock). The band musically is talented. Nothing extraordinary, but talented. The vocals (which may be the biggest draw) are good, and for the most part go with the music. To me the weakest part of the CD is the lyrics. To me they are just to generic. The lyrics are mostly about relationships and have sexual overtones. Which seems to be a must for any attractive female rock singer. There seems to be several songs about her "not being the one". I guess the lyrics and music are supposed to be fun, with a drink a beer rock n roll feel to it, but I'm not that into that. Another thing I just can't shake is that this CD has a very purposely commercial feel to it. Maybe even a little bit formulaic and compromised. This in the end to me is a 3-star album. I will be open to giving their next album a listen, but this album has not made me a fan. Notable tracks: What Were You Expecting, Better Sorry Than Safe, Nothing To Do With Love

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing vocals, May 22, 2010 By Master of Fright (Frighttown, USA) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Halestorm (Audio CD) First off, Lzzy Hale has got some amazing vocals going on. Shes probably one of my fave female vocalists now. This is a really great cd, but as someone else has stated, there are a lot of love/heartbreak type songs on it, which do tend to get old when its almost EVERY song on there. Other than that, this cd and band rocks. I like that she has a real rock n roll type voice. Stand out tracks: Its not you, Dirty Work, I Get Off, and the bonus track, Tell Me Where It Hurts.
